چکیده

We develop a formalism for describing the kinematics of a wormlike chain confined to the surface of a sphere that simultaneously satisfies the spherical confinement and the inextensibility of the chain contour. We use this formalism to study the statistical behavior of the wormlike chain on a spherical surface. In particular, we provide an exact, closed-form expression for the mean square end-to-end distance that is valid for any value of chain length L, persistence length l(p), and sphere radius R. We predict two qualitatively different behaviors for a long polymer depending on the ratio R/l(p). For R/l(p)>4, the mean square end-to-end distance increases monotonically with the chain length, whereas for R/l(p)<4, a damped oscillatory behavior is predicted.

Brownian dynamics simulations of charged semiflexible polymers confined to curved surfaces.

As an extension of the generalized bead-rod model developed earlier by the authors, this paper proposes a method for Brownian dynamics simulations of charged semiflexible polymers confined to various curved surfaces such as spherical, cylindrical, ellipsoidal and toroidal. We model charged semiflexible polymers as discrete wormlike chains consisting of virtual beads connected by inextensible ro...

Free energy of a long semiflexible polymer confined in a spherical cavity.

The free energy and conformational properties of a wormlike chain confined inside a spherical surface are investigated. We show that in the weak-confinement limit, the wormlike chain model exactly reproduces the confinement properties of a Gaussian chain; in such a case the confinement entropy dominates the free energy; in the strong-confinement limit, the free energy is dominated by the bendin...

Semiflexible polymer condensates in poor solvents: toroid versus spherical geometries.

Semiflexible polymers, such as DNA, in the presence of a condensing agent often form toroids. This is due to a balance between bending and surface area free energy penalties. Here we show why in experiments all the toroids have been found to have similar physical size. We also introduce a novel morphology, that of the hollow sphere, which is favored for long polymer chains. This offers the poss...

A coil-globule transition of a semiflexible polymer driven by the addition of spherical particles

The phase behaviour of a single large semiflexible polymer immersed in a suspension of spherical particles is studied. All interactions are simple excluded volume interactions and the diameter of the spherical particles is an order of magnitude larger than the diameter of the polymer. The spherical particles induce a quite long ranged depletion attraction between the segments of the polymer and...

Some Rigorous Results on Semiflexible Polymers I. Free and confined polymers

We introduce a class of models of semiflexible polymers. The latter are characterized by a strong rigidity, the correlation length associated to the gradient-gradient correlations, called the persistence length, being of the same order as the polymer length. We determine the macroscopic scaling limit, from which we deduce bounds on the free energy of a polymer confined inside a narrow tube.
